The DuraFlex SW (stainless wall) series uses a stamped stainless crown with a welded collar that mates to a 6-, 7-, or 8-inch flue diameter. The DuraFlex HT (high temperature) series, common on factory-built fireplace installations from 2012-2019, uses a heavier cast crown with a bolt-on collar and a wider overhang. The label is stamped on the collar underside, visible from the roof with a flashlight; if the tag’s weathered off, measure the flue OD and the crown overhang. A 1.5-inch overhang with a welded collar means SW. A 2.5-inch overhang with three bolt holes means HT.

We source OEM DuraFlex crowns through Haven’s buying network, but we also carry aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Gelco when the OEM lead time stretches past two weeks. Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks radiating from the flue collar. These start as shrinkage cracks in the mortar wash, then widen each winter as water freezes in the gap. By year three in West Chester’s climate, a 1/32-inch crack becomes a 3/16-inch channel that dumps water behind the crown.
• Rust streaks down the chimney face below the crown. The DuraFlex collar is stainless, but the fasteners and the underlying flue adapter are often galvanized. Once water breaches the crown, the rust runs down in telltale orange ribbons that owners spot from the driveway.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check three things from the ground with binoculars: crack pattern, rust staining, and crown slope. What you cannot safely do is work on a chimney crown without proper fall protection. The crown is the highest point of the structure, often on a 6/12 or steeper roof, and the surface is sloped to shed water - exactly the wrong geometry for footing. The mortar repair itself looks simple but fails within a season if the surface isn’t ground out to sound concrete and the mix isn’t formulated for crown exposure.

We don’t recommend DIY crown repair for DuraFlex systems because the collar-to-flue seal is a combustion safety joint. A gap there can allow carbon monoxide to escape the flue or allow water to enter and damage the liner below.
