Here’s what you can safely check yourself: the model number under the hood lip, whether the cap rocks when you press it (loose anchors), and whether water is entering the firebox during rain. Use binoculars from the ground; don’t climb.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong. Gelco caps require proper tension on the mesh skirt to seat against the flue tile without deforming it. Over-tighten and you crack the tile; under-tighten and you create a gap that funnels water inside. Crown anchoring demands a hammer drill with the right bit for your crown material, and the wrong anchor spins out or splits concrete. Most importantly, you’re working at height on a surface that may be spalled or slick with moss. We don’t recommend it.
